Great Wall of China from Beijing: tickets, routes and the best way to visit Mutianyu

A simple plan for choosing the right ticket, taking the cable car, walking at your own pace and returning to Beijing without transport stress.

A Great Wall day should feel memorable, not confusing. The difficult part is rarely the Wall itself. It is choosing the right section, buying the correct combination of tickets, reaching the entrance early and knowing how much walking your group will actually enjoy.

For most first time visitors staying in Beijing, we recommend Mutianyu. It is about 70 kilometers from central Beijing, surrounded by mountain scenery and easier to shape around couples, families, older guests and active walkers. You can ride up, walk a comfortable section and ride down, or spend several hours covering the steeper watchtowers.

The most important thing to understand is that there is no single ticket covering every possible activity. Great Wall admission, the shuttle, the enclosed cable car, the chairlift and the slide can be separate products. A little planning before departure saves a surprising amount of time at the entrance.

Which Great Wall section should you choose?

Mutianyu

Our usual choice for a private day trip. It has restored watchtowers, attractive mountain views, cable car access and flexible walking routes for mixed age groups.

Badaling

A practical option if you want to use the high speed train or need strong visitor facilities. It is famous and accessible, but it can feel busier at popular times.

Simatai

A good match if you also want Gubei Water Town or a seasonal evening experience. It is farther from central Beijing, so the day needs more time.

Jinshanling

Best for serious walkers and photographers who value longer mountain routes. It is not our first recommendation for small children or guests with limited mobility.

If this is your first visit and you simply want a beautiful Great Wall experience without turning it into an endurance test, Mutianyu is the easy answer.

Mutianyu ticket prices explained

These prices were checked on the official Mutianyu booking page on July 30, 2026. Scenic area prices, operating hours and available packages can change, so we confirm them again before every trip.

Adult admission

CNY 45 for the Great Wall entrance ticket. The discounted admission product was listed at CNY 25 for eligible visitors.

Admission and shuttle

CNY 60 for adult admission with the return shuttle. The discounted package was listed at CNY 40.

Admission, shuttle and cable car

CNY 200 for the adult package with return shuttle and return enclosed cable car. The discounted package was listed at CNY 180.

Cable car only

CNY 100 for one way or CNY 140 for a return ticket when bought separately from admission.

Important ticket detail

The enclosed cable car and the chairlift with slide are run as separate systems. Their tickets are not interchangeable, and they use different access points. Decide how you want to go up and down before buying the final combination.

The official page also listed the Great Wall Spirit Exhibition Hall at CNY 30 with guide narration, and an optional climbing exoskeleton rental at CNY 100 for the first three hours. These are extras, not requirements for a normal visit.

What foreign visitors need to book

Mutianyu uses real name ticketing. The name and passport number in the reservation should match the traveler exactly. Each passport can be used for one ticket per day, and everyone should carry the original passport used for the booking.

The official ticket system accepts foreign passport details. Visitors booked with a foreign passport do not normally need to exchange an electronic reservation for a paper ticket. Bring the original passport and keep the confirmation or QR code available on your phone.

The official site currently says reservations can open as early as 30 days before the visit, but booking windows can change. For weekends, public holidays and the autumn color season, reserve as soon as your date is fixed. Discount rules depend on age, nationality and supporting documents, so never assume a reduced ticket will be accepted without proof.

A realistic private Great Wall day from Beijing

This plan begins at a central Beijing hotel and keeps enough time for the Wall without rushing every stop.

7:30

Hotel pickup

Your chauffeur meets you in the lobby. Leaving before the main city traffic gives you a quieter arrival and cooler walking conditions.

9:15

Arrive at Mutianyu

Your guide confirms the tickets, passport check and chosen entrance. Use the restroom and buy water before taking the shuttle toward the Wall.

9:45

Ride up and start walking

For the easiest route, use the enclosed cable car and begin around the central watchtowers. Stronger walkers can continue farther and turn back when the group has had enough.

12:30

Choose the way down

Return by cable car for a calm finish. If you planned the chairlift and slide route, follow that ticket and entrance instead. Weather can affect operations.

13:15

Lunch near Mutianyu

Have a relaxed local lunch after the walk. This is more comfortable than carrying snacks and trying to eat quickly on the Wall.

14:30

Add one optional activity

Visit the exhibition hall, stop in a nearby village or return to Beijing for an early city activity. One thoughtful extra is better than forcing three attractions into the afternoon.

17:00

Hotel or dinner drop off

Your chauffeur returns you to the hotel or a restaurant in Beijing. The exact time depends on traffic, walking pace and the activity you add.

What can you do at Mutianyu?

Take an easy watchtower walk

Use the enclosed cable car, enjoy the views and walk between a few restored towers. This gives you the classic Great Wall experience without using all your energy on the climb from the base. It works well for families, short visits and older guests who are comfortable with steps.

Choose a longer mountain route

Active travelers can spend several hours walking the open section between the watchtowers. The route includes steep steps and uneven surfaces, even though the Wall is restored. Distance on a map can look short, but the constant climbs make it feel longer.

Ride the chairlift and slide

The open chairlift and slide are popular with families and travelers who want a more playful finish. They are not the same product as the enclosed cable car. Age, height, health and weather restrictions can apply, so check the operating rules before buying.

See the Great Wall at night

Mutianyu sometimes runs seasonal night visits with lighting and cable car access. Dates and hours change, and special programs can be suspended because of weather or events. Treat this as a separate experience, not something automatically included in a daytime ticket.

Visit the exhibition or have lunch nearby

The Great Wall Spirit Exhibition Hall is an easy addition if you want more historical context. A village lunch is often the better choice for families because everyone can rest before the drive back to Beijing.

What should you bring?

  • Your original passport: it should match the document used for the reservation.
  • Comfortable shoes: restored does not mean flat, and the steps vary in height.
  • Water and sun protection: shade on the Wall is limited.
  • A light layer: the mountain can feel cooler and windier than central Beijing.
  • A charged phone: keep the booking confirmation and your guide's contact available.
  • A realistic plan: tell us about children, older travelers, knee problems or fear of heights before the day.

Why a private vehicle makes the day easier

Mutianyu can be reached by public transport, but the journey normally involves a combination of city transport, a tourist bus or local connection, and the scenic area shuttle. That is manageable for some travelers. It is less enjoyable with children, luggage, limited time or an early flight the next day.

Direct hotel pickup

Leave from your lobby and avoid crossing Beijing to find the correct departure point.

Tickets prepared

We help match the admission, shuttle and cable option to the route you actually want.

A guide who adjusts

Your guide can shorten or extend the walk based on weather, crowds and how the group feels.

A waiting return

Your vehicle is ready when you finish, with no need to search for the next connection.

A comfortable sedan is suitable for one or two guests. An MPV is usually better for families, three to five travelers or anyone who wants more room after the walk. Larger private groups can use a van. The best vehicle is the one that fits the people and luggage comfortably.

Frequently asked questions

Is Mutianyu suitable for older travelers?

Often yes. Use the enclosed cable car, keep the walk short and explain any mobility concerns before booking. There are still steps and uneven surfaces.

Can children use the cable car?

The official policy says children at or below 1.2 meters can use the shuttle and cable car free. Other activities may have separate safety rules.

Can we visit the Forbidden City on the same day?

We do not recommend it. Both places deserve proper time, and Forbidden City entry uses a separate reservation. Choose a lighter Beijing stop after the Wall.

Can you arrange everything?

Yes. Send your date, hotel, group size and walking preference. We can arrange the vehicle, ticket support, guide and return as one plan.
