2 days in Hefei: the city, the stories and Sanhe Ancient Town

A route for travelers who want to understand Anhui, eat well and see more than the meeting room without wasting half the day in traffic.

Hefei is often treated as a connection on the way to somewhere else. That misses the point. Anhui's capital has the stories of Bao Zheng and the Three Kingdoms, serious museums, a modern science identity and one of the most rewarding ancient towns within an easy drive.

This two day itinerary works for a first visit and for a business traveler who has added a weekend. The first day stays inside the city. The second moves south to Sanhe Ancient Town and the Chaohu area. That simple split keeps the route clean.

Arriving in Hefei

Most visitors arrive through Hefei Xinqiao International Airport or Hefei South Railway Station. Hefei is a major high speed rail hub, so the train is often the easiest connection from Shanghai, Nanjing, Hangzhou or Wuhan.

Allow roughly 45 to 70 minutes from the airport to a central hotel, depending on traffic and the district. From Hefei South Railway Station, many central and Swan Lake hotels take around 20 to 40 minutes by car. Send the exact train number or flight number because Hefei has more than one railway station.

Where should you stay?

Historic center

Stay near Huaihe Road or the old Luyang center for easy access to Li Hongzhang's residence, Xiaoyaojin Park, local shops and the first day route.

Swan Lake district

A good choice for modern hotels, government offices and business travel. The lake gives the area an easy evening walk after meetings.

Hefei South Station

Practical for a short rail stop or an early departure. It saves transfer time but has less historic atmosphere outside the hotel.

High tech district

Useful when the trip includes research centers, technology companies or factories. Add sightseeing as a separate route rather than crossing the city repeatedly.

Day 1: Lord Bao, the old center and modern Anhui

09:00

Lord Bao Park

Begin by the Baohe River before the day becomes busy. The park brings together Lord Bao Temple, the cemetery, Qingfeng Pavilion and gardens devoted to Bao Zheng, the local official remembered across China as a symbol of justice. Allow 90 minutes to two hours.

11:15

Huaihe Road and Li Hongzhang's residence

Drive into the historic commercial center, then continue on foot. Li Hongzhang's former residence is the best preserved dignitary residence in Hefei and gives useful context for late Qing history. The official visitor page recommends one to three hours, but 60 to 90 minutes works for most first visits.

13:00

Lunch in the center

Try an Anhui restaurant rather than a generic shopping mall meal. Smelly mandarin fish has a strong name but a deep savory flavor. Feixi old hen soup is gentler, and Hefei's sesame cakes make an easy gift.

14:30

Choose one museum

Anhui Museum is the best general introduction to the province, with bronzes, ceramics, calligraphy and regional art. Families who care more about fossils and dinosaurs can choose the nearby Anhui Geological Museum instead. Both official pages list 9:00 to 17:00 hours, last admission at 16:00, free general entry and Monday closure outside public holiday arrangements.

18:00

Swan Lake at dusk

Finish in modern Hefei with a gentle walk near Swan Lake. It is a good visual change after temples and museums, and it works naturally for dinner if your hotel is in the business district.

If the museum is closed

Do not force a Monday museum visit. Add Xiaoyaojin Park near the historic center, slow down on Huaihe Road or spend more time at Lord Bao Park. The itinerary is still complete.

Day 2: Sanhe Ancient Town and the Chaohu landscape

Leave the hotel around 8:30. Sanhe Ancient Town sits about 40 kilometers south of central Hefei and normally takes around one hour by private vehicle. The name means three rivers, and the town grew where the Fengle, Hangbu and Xiaonan rivers meet.

Sanhe has more than 2,500 years of history. Its bluestone lanes, white walls, dark tiled roofs, bridges, waterways and late Qing homes make it feel distinct from central Hefei. Arriving early matters. The first hour is quieter, cooler and much better for photographs.

A simple walking route through Sanhe

  1. Enter through the main visitor area and follow the bluestone street before the tour groups arrive.
  2. Cross one of the old bridges and pause along the water rather than moving directly between ticketed rooms.
  3. Visit one or two interiors that match your interests. You do not need every small exhibition.
  4. Take a short boat ride only if the operating conditions and queue make sense.
  5. Have lunch in town and leave after the busiest early afternoon period begins.

The official portal lists general scenic access and separate small attractions, with seasonal hours around 8:00 to 18:00 in summer and 8:00 to 17:30 in winter. Verify the current ticket structure before travel because individual halls and activities can change.

What to eat in Sanhe

Come hungry. The town is known as much for food as architecture. Look for rice dumplings, rice noodles, fried snacks and local river dishes. Ask the guide or chauffeur to recommend a clean, established restaurant and confirm fish prices before ordering by weight.

Afternoon by Chaohu

After lunch, choose a short lakeside stop on the return route instead of trying to circle Chaohu. The lake is enormous, with a water area of around 770 square kilometers. A specific viewpoint or park is more realistic than saying you will simply “visit the lake.”

For families, a relaxed Binhu area stop works well. For photographers, the route and timing should follow the weather and light. If it rains heavily or the group is tired, return to Hefei early and have tea near the hotel. Sanhe is the important part of the day.

If you have another half day

Xiaoyaojin Park

A free central park connected to Three Kingdoms history. It fits naturally with Huaihe Road and is easy to add before a late train.

Anhui Geological Museum

A strong family choice with dinosaur fossils, minerals, meteorites and modern galleries. Reserve time rather than rushing in before closing.

Business and factory visits

Hefei is a major science and manufacturing center. Keep the professional visit separate from tourism and plan access, contact names and industrial park entrances in advance.

Continue into Anhui

Hefei is a useful starting point for a longer route toward Huangshan, Hongcun or Jiuhua Mountain, but each deserves proper time rather than a rushed same day return.

When is the best time to visit?

Spring and autumn are the easiest seasons for walking. Summer is hot, humid and rainy, so start outdoor visits earlier. Winter can feel damp and colder than the temperature suggests. Sanhe's stone lanes become slippery after rain, which is another reason to wear shoes with grip.

Public holidays change the experience. If the dates overlap with a major Chinese holiday, leave earlier, reserve museums and expect more traffic around Sanhe. A private vehicle helps with timing, but it cannot remove a holiday queue.

Which vehicle fits the itinerary?

  • Sedan: right for one or two travelers with light luggage and a city hotel.
  • MPV: better for three to five guests, older family members or a group carrying business bags.
  • Van: best for larger groups, delegations and trips that combine the airport, factories and sightseeing.

Ask the quote to state the included service hours, distance, parking, tolls, overtime and extra kilometer charge. Sanhe is outside central Hefei, so the route should be named clearly rather than treated as an ordinary city transfer.

How China Chauffeurs can arrange Hefei

We can coordinate Xinqiao Airport pickup, Hefei South Railway Station, city sightseeing, Sanhe Ancient Town, local guides, business meetings and factory visits through one operations contact. That matters when a free afternoon becomes available at short notice or a meeting changes the next pickup.

The service does not have to be ultra luxury. We can match a practical sedan, comfortable MPV, premium car or group van to the passengers and the actual day.

Frequently asked questions

Is two days enough?

Yes. One city day and one Sanhe day give a balanced first visit without making the route feel rushed.

How far is Sanhe?

It is about 40 kilometers from central Hefei. Allow around one hour each way, depending on the hotel and traffic.

Which museum is best?

Choose Anhui Museum for history and art. Choose the Geological Museum for fossils, dinosaurs and minerals.

Can this follow a business trip?

Yes. The city route fits a free afternoon, while Sanhe works well as a separate half or full day.
