Do not confuse Huangshan city, mountain and villages
Huangshan North Station, Tunxi, the mountain gates, Hongcun and Xidi are separate places. A hotel advertised as Huangshan may sit near the old city, near a scenic gate or in another county. Send the complete Chinese address before the vehicle is assigned. Private transport is especially useful because luggage and the village road do not align neatly with a single station transfer. The mountain itself uses controlled scenic buses, cableways and walking routes after the chauffeur reaches the permitted gate.

Day one: arrive and enter the Huizhou landscape
Meet at the correct station or airport and drive to Hongcun or a nearby base. Leave large cases at the hotel before walking the village. Moon Pond and South Lake are famous, but side lanes, ancestral spaces and working homes provide the real character. Ask before photographing residents or courtyards. Stay for the softer evening after many day visitors leave, then eat locally rather than driving back to a distant city hotel.
Day two: give Xidi a different purpose
Xidi and Hongcun share Huizhou architecture but should not be narrated as identical twins. Use Xidi to look closely at lane planning, gateways, carved details and the relationship between merchant wealth and family compounds. A guide can choose a few houses instead of repeating every room label. Huangshan’s municipal government continues to publish separate programs for both villages, reinforcing that each operates as its own destination. Add one quieter nearby village only if the group still has energy.
Day three: enter Huangshan on the clearest window
Use live weather to place the mountain on day two or three when reservations permit. Begin early, carry layers and choose a route around mobility. Cableways reduce climbing but do not eliminate stairs. Tiandu Peak and other areas can open or close seasonally, and entry may require an additional reservation. Do not promise a sea of clouds. Rain, fog and wind are part of the mountain. A thoughtful route remains rewarding even when the longest views disappear.
Day four: keep a weather response and onward connection
If the mountain day moved, use the final morning for the selected village or Tunxi Old Street before the train. If weather cooperated earlier, choose a gentle cultural stop, tea visit or rest. Avoid scheduling a long mountain descent immediately before a tight flight. The vehicle should know the exact station and departure time, while the guide confirms how much walking the group can still enjoy. Four days work because the last day is not already overloaded.
Choose hotels around access and sleep
A village guesthouse offers atmosphere but may involve steps, narrow lanes and a distant vehicle stop. A mountain top hotel protects sunrise access but requires carrying only what you need and can be expensive during peak dates. A gate hotel simplifies an early mountain entry.
