International visitors can now use China’s mobile payment system far more easily than a few years ago. Alipay and Weixin Pay support international bank cards, many merchants accept the familiar QR process, and major cities publish clear payment guidance for overseas travelers.
The experience is still smoother when you prepare before the flight. Download the official apps, register with the same name shown in your passport, link a supported card and complete any identity checks while you still have access to your normal phone number and bank.
Do not depend on one app or one card. A bank can block an unfamiliar overseas transaction, a small merchant may use a personal payment code, or your phone may lose signal. The calm setup is one mobile wallet, one backup card and some Chinese yuan.
What to do before you fly
- Download Alipay and Weixin, the app that contains Weixin Pay, from your official app store.
- Register with a phone number you can still receive messages on while abroad.
- Use your passport name exactly and complete identity verification if requested.
- Link at least one supported international Visa, Mastercard or other listed card.
- Tell your bank you will use the card in China and confirm overseas transaction controls.
- Keep a second physical card separate from the first.
App screens and limits change. Use the current in app instructions rather than a screenshot from an old travel video. Shanghai’s official visitor payment page also links current guides for international users.
Using Alipay as a visitor
Alipay is often the easiest first wallet for a visitor because the international interface is clear and it links travel services as well as payment. Once your card is connected, a merchant may scan your payment code or ask you to scan theirs. Check the amount before approving.
For transport, hotels and larger stores, the flow is usually straightforward. Small vendors can be less predictable, especially when the code is linked to an individual account. Keep your first test purchase small. If a transaction fails, do not repeat it rapidly before checking whether your bank has sent a security message.
Using Weixin Pay or WeChat Pay
Weixin Pay is useful because Weixin is also the communication app many hotels, guides, drivers and business contacts use. Open the wallet inside the app, follow the international card setup and complete any requested verification.
The payment method is similar: show a code for the merchant to scan or scan the merchant’s code. Some features and transfer functions can differ from those available to a mainland Chinese account. For ordinary visitor purchases, focus on merchant payments instead of person to person transfers.
Fees, limits and bank checks
China has adjusted mobile payment limits and fee policies for overseas visitors several times. Current limits depend on the wallet, identity verification and transaction type. Your issuing bank may also apply foreign exchange charges or block a purchase that looks unusual.
Before relying on one card, check its overseas fee and daily limit. Keep your banking app active and make sure it can send authentication without your home SIM being the only option. When a payment is declined, the problem may be the bank rather than the Chinese wallet.
Take a screenshot of the successful payment confirmation. It helps when a shop, driver or hotel needs to match the transaction, but never share a screen that reveals your full card details.
Should you still carry cash?
Yes. Renminbi cash remains legal tender. It is useful for a small shop, a payment outage or a card security block. You can exchange currency at banks and authorized counters or withdraw yuan from an ATM that supports your card network.
Carry practical denominations rather than only large notes. A merchant that handles mostly mobile payments may have limited change. Keep the withdrawal receipt and decline any unfamiliar conversion offer until you understand the exchange rate presented by the ATM.
Your first day payment plan
Airport
Use an official counter or ATM if you need cash. Avoid exchanging a large amount before comparing the rate and fee.
Transport
Prearranged transport removes the need to solve mobile payment while tired, carrying luggage and looking for the correct pickup zone.
Hotel
Ask the reception team to help you complete a small test payment near the hotel if you have not already used the wallet.
Daily spending
Use one mobile wallet for ordinary purchases, keep a physical card for hotels and carry a modest cash reserve.
Payments for business travelers
For factory visits and sourcing, separate personal spending from supplier payments. Do not send a large commercial deposit to a personal QR code simply because it is convenient. Confirm the legal company name, contract, bank details and invoice process through the appropriate business channel.
For China Chauffeurs bookings, we can issue a secure payment link and written confirmation. The transport team already has the airport, hotel and itinerary, so you are not solving payment and arrival logistics at the same time.
