10 essential apps to set up before your trip to China

You do not need dozens of apps to travel well in China. You need a small set that covers the moments when visitors usually get stuck: paying, finding the right entrance, calling a car, boarding a train, translating an address and contacting the people handling the trip.

Download the official versions before your flight and create the important accounts while you still have reliable access to your home number and bank. App interfaces change, so treat screenshots from old videos as general guidance rather than exact instructions.

The best setup is not phone perfection. It is one dependable app for each job, a saved offline record of the journey and a human contact who can help when the screen does not solve the problem.

1 and 2: Alipay and Weixin Pay

Alipay and Weixin Pay are the two mobile payment tools most visitors prepare. Both can support selected international cards, subject to identity verification, wallet rules and approval by the issuing bank. Set up at least one before departure and complete a small test transaction after arrival.

Weixin is also a communication tool. Hotels, guides, drivers and business contacts often use it for location pins and quick updates. Keep a physical card and some renminbi as backups because one declined transaction should never stop the day.

3: Amap, also known as Gaode Map

Amap is one of the most useful navigation tools inside China. In July 2026, Shanghai’s official international portal reported wider multilingual support for overseas visitors. It can help with addresses, driving time, public transport and the exact side of a large complex.

Save the hotel name and address in Chinese. A translation of the brand is not always enough when several properties have similar English names. For airport, railway and exhibition pickups, share the actual location pin with the transport team.

4: China Railway 12306

12306 is the official China Railway booking platform. International travelers can use a valid foreign passport for real name tickets. Keep the train number, departure station, arrival station, carriage and seat available offline.

Station names matter. Beijing South is not Beijing West, and Shanghai Hongqiao is not Shanghai Station. The app is useful, but a station transfer should still include the complete train number because that tells the driver where and when to meet you.

5: Your airline’s official app

Keep the airline’s official app on the phone for terminal changes, delays, boarding information and the booking reference. Turn on notifications for the travel day and save the flight number outside the app as well.

6: A dependable translation app

Choose a translation tool that supports downloaded language files, camera translation and spoken conversation. Download the Chinese language pack before flying. Camera translation is especially useful for a menu, washing machine, medicine label or railway notice.

For allergies, medical needs or technical factory questions, do not depend on spontaneous machine translation alone. Prepare the exact message in Chinese and have an appropriate person confirm it.

7 to 10: hotel, city, weather and secure document tools

• Your hotel booking app: save the confirmed room, full address, telephone number and cancellation terms.
• A local city guide: tools such as GO BEIJING or official Shanghai visitor services can provide current foreign visitor information.
• A weather app: check each destination separately because a multi city route can cross very different climates.
• A secure document tool: keep protected offline copies of essential confirmations without leaving passport details exposed in the photo gallery.

A separate restaurant or attraction app can be useful, but it is not essential for every traveler. Add it only when it supports a real plan.

The 30 minute setup before departure

1. Update the phone and confirm that it is unlocked if you plan to use another SIM.
2. Register payment and communication apps with a number you can still receive messages on.
3. Save the first hotel, airport pickup and emergency contact offline.
4. Download Chinese translation data and any essential documents.
5. Pack a power bank in cabin baggage according to airline and security rules.
6. Test that banking authentication will work outside your home country.

Battery, permissions and privacy

Download apps from official stores or the official service website. Review permissions and avoid sending a passport image through an unverified chat. Use a screen lock and keep remote device recovery active.

Navigation, translation and payment can consume battery quickly. Carry a compliant power bank and a short charging cable. At the end of the trip, remove cards or accounts you no longer need and keep the booking records required for expenses.
