China’s 240 hour visa free transit: the route matters as much as your passport

China’s 240 hour visa free transit policy can give eligible travelers up to ten days to visit approved areas without applying for a standard visa first. The policy is useful, but it is not the same as universal visa free entry. Your nationality, route, arrival port, onward ticket and travel area must all qualify.

As of July 2026, China’s National Immigration Administration lists 55 eligible countries, 65 open ports and 24 provincial level regions in the program. The list has expanded over time, so old articles that still mention 54 countries or 60 ports are out of date.

The immigration officer makes the final decision on arrival. A driver, airline or hotel cannot guarantee admission. The best preparation is a route that clearly meets the rules, complete documents and a plan that stays inside the permitted area.

The five questions that decide whether you may qualify

You also need a valid international travel document and the right to enter the next destination. The official policy refers to at least three months of passport validity. Airlines can conduct their own document checks before boarding.

What the third country or region rule means

Think of the route as A to mainland China to C. A and C must be different countries or regions. Paris to Shanghai to Tokyo has the correct structure. Paris to Shanghai to Paris is a return journey and does not normally satisfy the transit requirement.

Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan are treated as regions for this purpose. London to Beijing to Hong Kong can therefore have the right structure, subject to all other conditions. A domestic connection inside mainland China can be possible only when the chosen ports and permitted travel area support it. Do not construct a complicated route from assumptions found in an old forum post.

What to carry and what happens on arrival

• Your original eligible passport with sufficient remaining validity.
• The confirmed onward ticket to the third country or region within 240 hours.
• Evidence that you can enter the onward destination, including a visa when required.
• Your hotel address, booking and a simple itinerary inside the permitted area.
• Contact details for your hotel, host or transport coordinator.

Tell the departing airline that you intend to use the 240 hour visa free transit policy. On arrival, follow the signs for the relevant temporary entry process, complete the arrival card and present the documents. You must receive the temporary entry permit before leaving immigration control.

The 240 hours are generally counted from 00:00 on the day after entry, according to the official explanation. Do not use that calculation to book a departure at the absolute limit. Flight changes, weather and misunderstanding the local cutoff can become expensive.

Where can you travel?

The permitted movement depends on the port and connected regions. Some entry areas allow travel across several neighboring provincial level regions. Others are narrower. For example, a traveler entering through an approved Shanghai port may be able to travel within the connected Shanghai, Jiangsu and Zhejiang area under the current rules.

This does not mean that a traveler entering anywhere can travel throughout China. If your plan includes Beijing, Xi’an and Shanghai, normal visa free transit through one port is not automatically suitable. Check the current official port table against every city before buying nonrefundable transport.

Trips that work particularly well

• Shanghai, Suzhou and Hangzhou: a polished five to eight day route using the connected Yangtze River Delta area.
• Beijing and the Great Wall: a focused capital stay with Mutianyu, imperial sites and modern Beijing.
• Guangzhou and Shenzhen: useful for business visitors when the selected port and current permitted area support the route.
• Chengdu: a comfortable city stay for pandas, food and nearby cultural day trips.
• A short airport layover: possible when temporary entry is approved and the connection leaves a safe return buffer.

Common mistakes to avoid

The first mistake is buying a return ticket to the same country and calling it transit. The second is entering through a port that is not included or planning to leave the permitted area. The third is relying on a screenshot of an old country list. The fourth is booking a separate onward ticket without enough time for baggage and check in.

Do not assume a 240 hour transit permit guarantees ten full sightseeing days. Arrival time, the official counting method and the departure cutoff all matter. Keep a sensible reserve and verify the current rule shortly before travel.

Planning the arrival after approval
