What to pack for China and what to keep in your hand luggage

Most travelers do not need more things. They need the important things in the right bag. Passport, medication, payment backups, a working phone and the first hotel details should never be buried in checked luggage.

Pack around the route and season. Beijing winter, Shanghai summer and Yunnan mountain evenings are different trips. Check the forecast for every destination a few days before departure and adjust layers rather than relying on a national weather average.

Documents to prepare

• Original passport with the visa or entry documents required for your trip.
• Onward or return flight confirmation and the first hotel address.
• Travel insurance details and emergency contact numbers.
• Copies of important documents stored separately and securely.
• Train and attraction confirmations that use the passport for real name access.
• A translated medical note when carrying important prescription medicine.

China introduced an online arrival card for international travelers in November 2025. Eligible travelers can submit entry details before arrival through official National Immigration Administration channels. Those unable to complete it in advance can use the available port methods, including on site digital tools or a paper card.

Keep these items in hand luggage

Carry the passport, wallet, medication, phone, charger, compliant power bank, one light layer and essential toiletries in the cabin bag. Add one change of clothes when a checked suitcase delay would affect an important meeting or event.

Keep the hotel address and driver contact available offline. If the phone loses data, you can still show the Chinese address and agreed meeting instructions.

Phone, power and electrical items

China uses 220 volt electricity. Many modern chargers accept 100 to 240 volts, but read the label on each device. A plug adapter changes the plug shape. It does not convert voltage.

Bring a small multiport charger and the correct cables. Power banks belong in cabin baggage and remain subject to current airline and security rules. Avoid traveling with damaged or unmarked battery products.

Clothing that works across the trip

Use comfortable walking shoes that are already broken in. Pack layers, one light rain shell and clothing that can move from a historic site to a good restaurant without a full change. Summer needs breathable fabric and sun protection. Northern winter needs a real insulated coat, gloves and warm footwear.

Hotel laundry or a planned laundry stop can reduce the suitcase on a multi city trip. Leave some space for purchases instead of arriving with an already overloaded case.

Medicine and personal care

Bring essential prescription medicine in original packaging and carry enough for the trip plus a sensible delay. Ask the prescribing professional for a letter that uses the generic medicine name. Rules vary by substance, so verify controlled or unusual medication before travel.

Pack basic items you know work for you, including pain relief, stomach care, allergy medicine and blister protection, subject to medical advice. Do not carry prohibited narcotics or psychotropic substances. Customs and health rules take priority over a generic packing list.

Customs and items that need attention

China Customs requires truthful declaration. Personal baggage should be for personal use and a reasonable quantity. The official passenger guide lists cash thresholds, commercial samples, animals, plants, certain communications equipment and other restricted articles that require declaration or control.

When unsure, choose the goods to declare channel and ask a customs officer. Food, plant material and animal products can create quarantine issues. Business travelers carrying samples should not treat commercial goods as ordinary personal luggage.

The arrival checklist

1. Connect the phone and send a short arrival message when permitted.
2. Complete immigration and collect every checked item before leaving the controlled area.
3. Use the correct customs channel and retain any endorsed declaration.
4. Follow the confirmed airport meeting point instead of an unsolicited transport offer.
5. At the hotel, confirm that accommodation registration is handled.
6. Test payment, data and the next morning’s route before sleeping.

Hotels normally handle residence registration for their guests. Travelers staying elsewhere must follow the current local registration requirement, generally within 24 hours.

Choose transport from the bags, not only the passengers

A sedan may suit two people with two medium cases. A family with a stroller, several large cases or sports equipment needs an MPV or van. Send a photo when an item is unusually large.

The correct airport vehicle lets the cabin remain comfortable and the luggage remain safely contained. It is a small decision that shapes the first impression of the trip.
