China is not difficult in the way many first time visitors expect. The streets are safe, transport is efficient and daily life moves quickly. The surprise is that a few familiar travel habits do not work in quite the same way. Your first day becomes much easier when your phone, payment apps, hotel address and airport pickup are ready before the aircraft door opens.
This is the guide we would send to a friend before their first trip. It is not a long list of rules. It is a practical plan for the small moments between landing and waking up ready to enjoy China.
Do these six things before your flight
Save your hotel in Chinese
Take one screenshot showing the hotel name, full address and telephone number in Chinese. Keep it in your photos, not only in an email that needs mobile data. A driver, station employee or local person can then identify the right entrance immediately.
Complete the official arrival card
China introduced an official online arrival card in November 2025. It is free. Use only the official National Immigration Administration channels and ignore websites that ask for a processing payment. Paper forms remain available for travelers who cannot complete it online.
Make sure your phone will connect
Arrange roaming or a suitable travel data plan before departure. If you need a Chinese number during a longer stay, the main mobile operators can issue a local SIM at an official service office after checking your passport.
Set up two ways to pay
Install Alipay or WeChat, register with your normal telephone number and bind a major international bank card. Test the account before you travel because your bank may ask you to approve the connection. Bring a physical bank card and some cash too. A backup is sensible in every country.
Download a map and translation app
Amap now offers expanded multilingual support for international visitors. Save the airport, hotel and first destination before the flight. A translation app with an offline language pack is also useful when you want to explain something precise.
Send the real arrival details
Your chauffeur needs the flight number, airport, terminal, passenger names, working contact and actual luggage count. Two people with six large suitcases need an MPV or van, not a sedan that happens to have four seats.
What happens after you land?
Follow the signs to immigration, show the passport and entry permission required for your trip, then collect your luggage and continue through customs. Keep your baggage tag until you leave the arrivals area. Large airports can involve a long walk, so a flight landing time is never the same as a pickup time.
Once you have your bags, connect to airport WiFi or mobile data and message the arrival contact. A good airport service has already monitored the flight. You should receive a clear meeting point and know whose name will appear on the sign. You should not need to negotiate with someone approaching you in the terminal.
Do not follow a photograph of the vehicle through the airport. Meet the named chauffeur at the confirmed point, check the booking name and keep the operations contact open until you are in the correct car. In a busy arrivals hall, precise instructions are more valuable than a vague promise that someone will find you.
Your first hour outside the airport
The drive is the right moment to settle the trip. Connect your phone, have some water and confirm the hotel entrance with the chauffeur. If your next day includes meetings, a factory visit, a guide or a train, ask the operations team to check the pickup time now.
Traffic can be heavy in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen and other large cities. Do not read a map estimate as a promise. Your driver can explain the realistic arrival time and choose a practical route. If you are tired, let the hotel know you are coming rather than trying to add a stop on the way.
Hotel check in and accommodation registration
At a normal hotel, present your passport at reception. The hotel registers foreign guests as part of the check in process. Keep the passport available even if the room was prepaid or booked by someone else.
If you stay in a private home, apartment or accommodation that does not register you, the procedure is different. China requires foreign guests staying outside hotels to complete accommodation registration within 24 hours. Online registration is available in some pilot regions, but it is not sensible to assume the same method works everywhere. Ask the host or local public security office what is required for that address.
Will Alipay and WeChat Pay really work?
Usually, yes. Official guidance says visitors can register with a foreign telephone number and bind major international cards to Alipay or WeChat Pay. That makes ordinary payments much easier, from restaurants and shops to many transport services.
The smart approach is still to arrive with options. Complete identity checks before departure. Tell your bank you are traveling if required. Keep a physical card and a modest amount of renminbi. If one payment is declined, try the other method instead of repeatedly attempting the same card.
When scanning a code, look carefully at the recipient and amount before confirming. Restaurants sometimes ask you to scan a table code to order. Small shops may show a payment code at the counter. It feels natural after the first few purchases.
Maps, addresses and finding the right entrance
Chinese cities are large enough for one building to have several entrances. A translated hotel name may also produce more than one result. Save the Chinese address, telephone number and map pin together. For a business meeting, ask for the building name, tower, gate and floor.
Amap is useful for local navigation and public transport information. Your hotel team can also write a destination in Chinese. If you are taking a train later in the trip, use the official 12306 service and enter the passport details exactly as shown. China uses real name railway tickets, so a spelling mistake can create unnecessary trouble at the station.
What should you do on the first evening?
Do less than you think. Check in, shower, eat somewhere close and take a short walk if you still have energy. Your body is adjusting to the flight, and the best first night is often the one that ends early.
Before sleeping, confirm three things: tomorrow's pickup time, the first destination in Chinese and the number for your local coordinator. Charge your phone and a portable battery. Put the hotel card in your wallet. You will wake up with the difficult part already handled.

Sedan
A comfortable choice for one or two travelers with light luggage. Everyday executive and premium models can be arranged according to budget.
MPV
The practical choice for a family, extra suitcases or passengers who want more room after a long flight.
