Yunnan changes quickly. Kunming feels mild and urban, Dali opens onto Erhai Lake, and Lijiang sits beneath high mountains. Trying to see all three in four days turns the journey into stations, hotel lobbies and suitcases.
Six days is a realistic introduction. It gives each place one complete day and protects the route from mountain weather, altitude and transport delays.
Days 1 and 2: Kunming
Arrive in Kunming and use the first evening for local food and rest. The city is more than a connection. On the next day choose Dianchi Lake and the western hills, a flower market, or the Stone Forest if the group is comfortable with a longer road excursion.
Kunming is known as the City of Eternal Spring, but evenings can still be cool. Dress in layers and do not assume one forecast covers the entire Yunnan route.
Days 3 and 4: Dali and Erhai
Travel to Dali by rail and meet the local chauffeur at the station. Stay near the old town for easy evenings or beside Erhai for quiet views. Use the first afternoon for the old town after day crowds begin to thin.
Give the next day to a section of Erhai Lake, a Bai village and one proper lunch. The lake loop is long. Choose the eastern or western side according to hotel location instead of claiming every viewpoint.
Days 5 and 6: Lijiang
Continue by road or rail to Lijiang. Explore the old town later in the day, then use the final full morning for Jade Dragon Snow Mountain when tickets, weather and health allow. The mountain requires more planning than a city attraction.
Altitude affects people differently. Walk slowly, drink water, avoid heavy alcohol the night before and tell the guide immediately if anyone feels unwell. A lower valley, Baisha village or cultural route can replace the highest plan.
Travel with respect
Yunnan is home to many communities with distinct languages, traditions and religious practices. Choose experiences run with local participation. Ask before photographing people, and avoid staged costume stops that reduce living culture to a prop.
Rail, road and luggage
