Three days gives you one focused panda morning, one historical day and enough unplanned time to understand why Chengdu feels different from China’s faster coastal cities.
Where to stay and how to arrive
Choose a central hotel around Taikoo Li for easy restaurants, or stay closer to the river and older neighborhoods for a quieter atmosphere. Chengdu has two major airports, so send the correct flight number and airport to the driver.
Use the arrival evening for a simple hotpot or Sichuan meal. Ask for a mild broth if needed. “Not too spicy” can still be lively, and a divided pot lets the table try more than one level.
Day 1: Pandas early, city slowly
Reserve the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding with the exact passport details. Current official guidance uses real name reservations and timed entry. Go early because pandas are often more active before the day warms and visitor numbers build.
After lunch, choose People’s Park and a teahouse. Do not fill the afternoon with another distant attraction. Tea, ear cleaning if you are curious, and a walk through central streets reveal more about daily Chengdu than another rushed ticket gate.
Day 2: Wuhou Shrine, Jinli and food
Visit Wuhou Shrine with a guide who can make the Three Kingdoms story understandable. Continue to nearby Jinli, but treat it as a lively commercial street rather than an untouched old town. Snack lightly and save room for a serious dinner.
In the afternoon, choose a food walk, a market, or a cooking class. Useful local dishes include mapo tofu, dan dan noodles, twice cooked pork and sweet water noodles. A good guide asks about allergies and spice tolerance before ordering.
Day 3: Dujiangyan, Sanxingdui or more Chengdu
Choose only one. Dujiangyan suits travelers interested in landscape and ancient engineering. Sanxingdui suits archaeology and extraordinary bronze art. A quiet city day suits anyone who wants galleries, cafés and more food without another long transfer.
Families may prefer a slower Dujiangyan day with limited walking. Museum lovers should confirm Sanxingdui tickets early. Travelers with an afternoon flight should stay in Chengdu and protect the airport buffer.
